'understand', 'interpret'이랑 비슷한 뜻이지만 조금 더 고오급인 단어 'construe'를 알아보자.

케임브릿지 사전은 'construe sth as sth'을 "to understand the meaning, especially of other people's actions and statements, in a particular way(어떤 것, 특히 다른 이의 행동이나 발언을 특정한 방식으로 그 의미를 이해하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Any changes to the plan would be construed as indecision(계획에 조금이라도 변화가 생겼다가는 망설임으로 해석될 수 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'construe'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is construed in a particular way, its nature or meaning is interpreted in that way(어떤 것이 특정한 방식으로 construe 된다면, 그 본질이나 의미가 그 방식으로 해석되는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"What may seem helpful behaviour to you can be construed as interference by others(도움이 되는 행동처럼 보이는 것이 타인의 방해로 해석될 수도 있다)."

"He may construe the approach as a hostile act(그는 그런 접근을 적대 행위로 해석할지도 모른다)."

"We are taught to construe these terms in a particular way(우리는 이런 용어들을 특정한 방식으로 이해하라고 배웠다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'construe'를 "to understand the meaning of something in a particular way(어떤 것의 의미를 특정한 식으로 이해하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Please do not construe this as any criticism of yourself(이것을 당신에 대한 비판이라고 여기지는 말아 주십시오)."
