'blackmail'은 자신이 원하는 대로 하거나 돈을 주지 않으면 비밀을 폭로하겠다고 협박하는 것이다. 너무나 악당스러운 단어...

케임브릿지 사전은 'blackmail'을 "the act of getting money from people or forcing them to do something by threatening to tell a secret of theirs or to harm them(상대에게 그들의 비밀을 말하겠다거나 신체적 해를 입히겠다고 협박함으로써 사람들에게 돈을 받아 내거나 무엇을 하도록 강요하는 행위)"이라고 정의했다.

"If you are in a position of authority, any weakness leaves you open to blackmail(권력을 가진 자리에 있다면, 조그만 약점이라도 협박의 대상이 되기 십상이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'blackmail'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Blackmail is the action of threatening to reveal a secret about someone, unless they do something you tell them to do, such as giving you money(blackmail은 상대가 예컨대 당신에게 돈을 주는 등, 당신이 하라는 대로 하지 않으면 상대의 비밀을 폭로하겠다고 협박하는 행위이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'blackmail'을 "to make someone give you money or do what you want by threatening to tell people embarrassing information about them(상대의 수치스러운 사실을 사람들에게 말하겠다고 협박하여 상대가 돈을 주거나 당신이 원하는 것을 하게 만들다)"이라고 풀이했다.
