'stroke'에는 다양한 뜻이 있는데, 시계나 종이 '치는 소리, 울림'이라는 뜻도 있다. 여기에 쓰인 'stroke'이 바로 그런 뜻이다.

'at/on the stroke of'라고 하면 '정확히 몇 시에'라는 뜻이다. 예를 들어 'at the stroke of one'이라고 하면 '정확히 한 시에'가 된다.
