[영어 공부] up in the air(아직 미정인)

 

비행기가 아직 착륙하지 않았다면 이론상으로 사고 날 가능성은 언제나 있는 셈이다(물론 비행기는 정말 안전한 이동 수단에 속한다).

그래서 계획이나 결정 따위가 'up in the air' 하다면 '아직 미정'이라는 뜻이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'up in the air'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If a matter is up in the air, it is uncertain, often because other matters have to be decided first(어떤 문제가 up in the air 하다면, 대개 다른 문제들이 먼저 결정되어야 하기 때문에 불확실한 것이다)."

"The whole future of the project is still up in the air(그 프로젝트의 미래는 아직도 완전히 미정이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'up in the air'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that a decision or a situation is up in the air, you mean that it has not yet been completely settled or planned(어떤 결정이나 상황이 up in the air 하다고 말한다면, 그것이 완전히 해결되거나 정해지지 않았다는 뜻이다)."

"With his contract expiring during the summer, the defender's future is up in the air(그의 계약이 여름에 만료되는데, 그 수비수의 미래는 아직 불투명하다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'up in the air'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if a plan is up in the air, you have not yet decided what will happen(계획이 up in the air 하다면, 어떤 일이 일어날지 결정하지 못한 것이다)"
