[영어 공부] stand down((직장, 직책에서) 물러나다[사임하다])

 

'stand down'은 직장, 직위, 직책 등에서 물러나는 것이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'stand down'을 "to give up your official job or position(공식적인 책무 또는 직위를 포기하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"He's decided to stand down after 15 years as managing director(그는 15년간 상무 이사로 근무해 온 이후 물러나기로 결심했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'stand down'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone stands down, they resign from an important job or position, often in order to let someone else take their place(누가 stand down 한다면, 대개 다른 이가 그 자리를 맡도록 하기 위해 중요한 책무 또는 직위에서 사임하는 것이다)."

"Four days later, the despised leader finally stood down, just 17 days after taking office(나흘 후, 그 경멸받던 리더는 취임한 지 17일 만에 마침내 사임했다)."

"Profits plunged and he stood down as chairman last January(이익이 곤두박질쳤고 그는 지난 1월 회장직에서 물러났다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'stand down'을 "to leave a job or position, especially an important one(특히 중요한 책무 또는 직위를 떠나다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"She’ll be standing down as president at the end of the year(그는 올해 말에 회장 자리에서 물러날 것이다)."
