물건이 너무 많아서 어수선하고 단정하지 못한 상태를 'clutter', 그리고 그렇게 물건들을 많이 어수선하게 쌓거나 채우거나 집어넣는 행동을 동사로 'clutter'라고 할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'clutter'의 명사 형태를 "(a lot of objects in) a state of being untidy((많은 물건들이) 단정하지 못한 상태)"라고 정의했다.

"Sorry about the clutter in the kitchen(부엌이 어수선해서 미안)."

"My desk is covered in/full of clutter(내 책상은 잡동사니로 뒤덮여 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'clutter'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Clutter is a lot of things in an untidy state, especially things that are not useful or necessary(clutter는 특히 유용하거나 필수적이지 않은 물건들이 단정하지 못한 상태로 많이 있는 것을 말한다)."

"Caroline prefers her worktops to be clear of clutter(캐롤라인은 조리대에 잡동사니가 없이 깨끗한 상태를 선호한다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'clutter'의 동사 형태를 "to put too many things in a place so that it looks untidy(한 곳에 너무 많은 물건을 두어서 단정하지 못하게 보이다)"라고 풀이했다.
