[영어 공부] take the reins(통솔하다, 지휘하다, 지배권을 잡다)

 

'reins'는 일차적으로 '고삐'라는 뜻이다. 그리고 이 기본적이 의미에서 '통솔권, 통제력'이라는 이차적 의미가 파생돼 나왔다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'take over/up the reins'를 "to take control of something, especially an organization or a country(어떤 것, 특히 단체나 국가를 통제하다)"라고 정의했다.

"He took up the reins of government immediately after the coup(그는 쿠데타 직후 정부의 지배권을 잡았다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'take the reins'를 "to take control(통제하다)"이라고 설명했다.

"The President-elect will officially take the reins in January(대통령 당선자는 공식적으로 1월부터 집정할 예정이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'reins'를 "control of a company, government, or organization(기업, 정부, 또는 단체의 통제권)"이라고 풀이했다.

"It’s his deputy who really holds the reins of power(진짜 권력의 고삐를 쥔 건 그의 대리인이다)."

'hand/take over the reins'의 형태로 쓰면 "give someone control of something or take control of it(누군가에게 어떤 것의 통제권을 주거나 차지하게 하다)"이라는 뜻이다.

"Hiroshi Okuda took over the reins of Toyota in August 1995(히로시 오쿠다는 1995년 8월에 도요타의 지휘권을 넘겨받았다)."

'hold the reins'의 형태로 쓰면 "be the person who controls something(어떤 것을 통제하는 사람이다)"이라는 뜻이다.

"the designers who hold the creative reins at Dior fashion house(디오르 패션 하우스의 창의적 지휘권을 가진 디자이너들)"
