'testimonoal'은 '(흔히 이전 고용주가 작성해 주는) 추천서, (어떤 것의 품질에 대한) 추천의 글'이라는 뜻이 있다. 전자의 뜻으로는 대개 'reference'라는 단어를 훨씬 더 많이 쓰긴 하지만.

어떤 서비스나 상품을 판매하는 웹사이트를 보면 종종 '소비자/고객 후기' 같은 코너가 있는데, 이렇게 실제로 사용해 본 사람이 좋다고 말하며 추천하는 글이 바로 'testimonial'이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'testimonial'을 "a formal written statement about the qualities of a product or service(어떤 제품이나 서비스의 질에 관한, 포멀한 진술서)"라고 정의했다.

"Financial Mail exposed the company's use of fake or doctored customer testimonials in advertising(파이낸셜 메일은 그 기업이 광고에 가짜 또는 조작된 고객 후기를 사용했음을 폭로했다)."
