'self-conscious' 한 건 말 그대로 자기 자신을 의식하는 거다. 남들이 나를 어떻게 볼까, 뭐라고 생각할까 하는 걸 의식하는 거.

대개 청소년들이 'self-conscious' 하다. 실제로는 아무도 자기한테 관심 없는데도...

케임브릿지 사전은 'self-conscious'를 "nervous or uncomfortable because you are worried about what people think about you or your actions(다른 사람들이 당신 또는 당신의 행동을 어떻게 생각할지 걱정되기 때문에 긴장하거나 불편해하는)"라고 정의했다.

"He looked uncomfortable, like a self-conscious adolescent(그는 마치 자의식 강한 청소년처럼 불편해 보였다)."

콜린스 사전은 'self-conscious'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone who is self-conscious is easily embarrassed and nervous because they feel that everyone is looking at them and judging them(self-conscious한 사람은 모든 이들이 자신을 바라보고 판단을 내린다고 느껴서 쉽게 민망해하고 긴장하는 사람이다)."
