케임브릿지 사전은 'pompous'를 "too serious and full of importance(너무 진지하고 중요성을 강조하는)"라고 정의했다.

"He's a pompous old prig who's totally incapable of taking a joke(그는 당최 농담을 받아들일 줄 모르는, 젠체하는 도덕군자이다)."

"He can sometimes sound a little pompous when he talks about acting(그는 연기에 대해 이야기할 때 때로 다소 좀 거만하게 들릴 수 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pompous'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as pompous, you mean that they behave or speak in a very serious way because they think they are more important than they really are(어떤 사람을 pompous라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 실제보다 자신이 더 중요한 사람이라고 생각하기 때문에 아주 진지하게 행동하거나 말한다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

맥밀란 사전은 'pompous'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "someone who is pompous thinks they are very important and speaks or behaves in a very serious and formal way(pompous한 사람은 자신이 무척 중요하다고 생각하고 아주 진지하며 포멀하게 말하거나 행동하는 사람이다)"
