케임브릿지 사전은 'pander'를 "to do or provide exactly what a person or group wants, especially when it is not acceptable, reasonable, or approved of, usually in order to get some personal advantage(특히 그것이 용인될 만하거나 적절하거나 승인받거나 하지 않을 때, 대개 개인적 이득을 위해 어떤 사람이나 그룹이 원하는 것을 하거나 제공하다)"라고 정의했다.

"It's not good the way she panders to his every whim(그녀가 그의 변덕에 영합하는 것은 좋지 않다)."

"Political leaders almost inevitably pander to big business(정치적 지도자들은 거의 불가피하게 큰 기업에 영합한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'pander'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you pander to someone or to their wishes, you do everything that they want, often to get some advantage for yourself(누군가에게, 또는 그들의 소망에 pander to 한다면, 대개 자신이 이득을 얻기 위해 그들이 원하는 것을 모두 해 주는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

맥밀란 사전은 'pander to'를 "to do or say what someone wants in order to please them, even though you know it is not right(그것이 옳지 않다 하더라도, 타인을 기쁘게 하기 위해 그 사람이 원하는 것을 하거나 말하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
