케임브릿지 사전은 'scrape'를 "to remove an unwanted covering or a top layer from something, especially using a sharp edge or something rough(특히 날카로운 끄트머리나 거친 것을 이용해 어떤 것의 원치 않는 막이나 표면을 제거하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Scrape your boots clean before you come in(들어오기 전에 부츠를 깨끗하게 긁어 내라)."

"We'll have to scrape the snow off the car before we go out in it(차 타고 나가기 전에 차에 쌓인 눈을 긁어 내야겠다)."
