케임브릿지 사전은 'vernacular'를 "the form of a language that a particular group of speakers use naturally, especially in informal situations(특히 인포멀한 상황에서 특정한 발화자 집단이 자연스럽게 쓰는 언어의 형태)"라고 정의했다.

"The Spanish I learned at school is very different from the local vernacular of this Mexican village(내가 학교에서 배운 스페인어는 이 멕시코 마을에서 동네 사람들이 쓰는 토착어와는 아주 다르다)."
