케임브릿지 사전은 'offbeat'를 "unusual and strange and therefore surprising or noticeable(특이하고 낯설며 따라서 놀랍거나 눈에 띄는)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'offbeat'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something or someone as offbeat, you think that they are different from normal(어떤 것 또는 어떤 사람을 offbeat라고 묘사하면, 그들이 정상과는 다르다는 뜻이다)."
