케임브릿지 사전은 'obfuscate'를 "to make something less clear and harder to understand, especially intentionally(어떤 것을 이해하기에 덜 명확하고 더 어렵게 하다, 특히 일부러 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"She was criticized for using arguments that obfuscated the main issue(그녀는 주요 이슈를 더욱 어렵게 만든 근거를 내세웠다고 비판받았다)."

"Companies deliberately obfuscate figures in complicated annual reports(기업들은 복잡한 연례 보고서를 의도적으로 더 혼란스럽게 만든다)."

"Instead of concealing or obfuscating, the doctors involved admitted their fault and launched an investigation(그 일을 감추거나 애매하게 만드는 대신, 관련된 의사들은 자신의 잘못을 인정하고 수사를 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'obfuscate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "To obfuscate something means to deliberately make it seem confusing and difficult to understand(어떤 것을 obfuscate 한다는 것은 의도적으로 그것을 이해하기기에 혼란스럽고 어렵게 만드는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.
