[영어 공부] hindsight((일이 다 벌어진 뒤에) 사정을 다 알게 됨, 뒤늦은 깨달음)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'hingsight'를 "the ability to understand an event or situation only after it has happened(어떤 사건이나 상황이 일어난 후에야 이해할 수 있는 능력)"라고 정의했다.

"With (the benefit/wisdom of) hindsight, I should have taken the job(뒤늦게 깨달은 것이지만, 나는 그 자리를 잡았어야 했다)."

"In hindsight, it would have been better to wait(이제 와서 되돌아 보면, 기다리는 게 나았을 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hindsight'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Hindsight is the ability to understand and realize something about an event after it has happened, although you did not understand or realize it at the time(hindsight는 당시에는 이해하거나 깨닫지 못하지만 어떤 사건이 일어난 후에 어떤 것을 이해하고 깨닫는 능력이다)."

"With hindsight, we'd all do things differently(깨닫고 난 후에는, 우리는 모두 (과거의 일을) 다르게 하리라고 생각한다)."

"Even with the benefit of hindsight, I doubt I would change anything if I had my time again(다 지나고 나서 생각해 봐도, 그때로 되돌아간다 해도 무엇을 바꿀 것인지는 의심스럽다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'hindsight'를 "the opportunity to judge or understand past events using knowledge that you have gained since then(과거 사건 이후에 얻은 지식을 이용해 그것들을 판단하거나 이해할 수 있는 기회)"이라고 풀이했다.

"With the benefit of hindsight, it’s easy to say it was the wrong decision(뒤늦게 깨달은 후에 그것이 잘못된 결정이었다고 말하기는 쉽다)."
