케임브릿지 사전은 'seize up'을 "to stop being able to move or work in the normal way(더 이상 정상적으로 움직이거나 작동할 수 없게 되다)"라고 정의했다.

"The washing machine totally seized up on Thursday(세탁기가 목요일에 완전히 작동을 멈춰 버렸다)."

"The traffic had seized up for miles because of the roadworks(도로 공사 때문에 교통이 몇 마일이나 멈춰 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'seize up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If a part of your body seizes up, it suddenly stops working, because you have strained it or because you are getting old(신체의 일부가 seize up 한다면, 그것을 혹사했거나 나이가 들어서 그것이 갑자기 잘 작동하기를 멈추는 것이다)."
