케임브릿지 사전은 'on end'를 "continuously(계속해서)"라고 정의했다.

"She practices the violin for hours on end(그녀는 쉬지 않고 몇 시간이나 계속해서 바이올린을 연습했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on end'를 이렇게 설명했다. "When something happens for hours, days, weeks, or years on end, it happens continuously and without stopping for the amount of time that is mentioned(어떤 것이 몇 시간, 며칠, 몇 주, 또는 몇 년간 on end 하게 일어난다면, 그것이 언급된 시간 동안 계속해서, 멈추지 않고 일어난다는 뜻이다)."

"He is a wonderful companion and we can talk for hours on end(그는 참 좋은 벗이고 우리는 몇 시간이고 쉬지 않고 이야기할 수 있다)."

"I spend days on end in this studio(나는 이 스튜디오에서 쉬지 않고 며칠을 보냈다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'hours/days/weeks etc on end'를 "used for emphasizing how long something continues(어떤 것이 얼마나 오랫동안 지속되는지를 강조하기 위해 쓰는 말)"라고 풀이했다.

"He talks for hours on end about absolutely nothing(그는 아무것도 아닌 이야기를 몇 시간이고 쉬지 않고 한다)."
