케임브릿지 사전은 'wean sb off sth'을 "to make someone gradually stop using something that is bad for them(어떤 사람으로 하여금 그들에게 좋지 않은 것을 점차 끊게 하다)"이라고 정의했다. 

"It's difficult to wean addicts off cocaine once they're hooked(한번 중독되면 중독자가 코카인을 끊게 하기는 어렵다)."

"The whole scheme is intended to wean people off welfare dependency(이 계획은 사람들이 복지에 의존하는 것을 서서히 그만두게 하는 것을 목표로 한다)."
