케임브릿지 사전은 'border on sth'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If behaviour, a quality, or a feeling borders on something more extreme, it is almost that thing(어떤 행동, 자질, 또는 느낌이 더욱 극단적인 어떤 것에 border on 한다면, 거의 그것이나 다름없는 것이다)"

"His suggestion borders on the ridiculous(그의 제안은 거의 터무니없는 소리였다)."

"She possesses a self-confidence that borders on arrogance(그녀는 거의 거만함에 가까울 정도로 자신감이 넘쳤다)."

콜린스 사전은 'border on'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you talk about a characteristic or situation bordering on something, usually something that you consider bad, you mean that it is almost that thing(대개 당신이 나쁘다고 여기는 것에 대해 border on 하는 특징이나 상황에 관해 이야기한다면, 전자가 거의 후자나 다름없다는 뜻이다)."
