[영어 공부] shiftless((인생에서) 꿈도 야망도 없는[아무 의욕이 없는])

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'shiftless'를 "lazy and not having much determination or a clear purpose(게으르고 투지나 명확한 목적이 없는)"라고 정의했다.

"He called the young people shiftless, lazy and good-for-nothing(그는 젊은이들을 야망도 없고, 게으르고, 아무 짝에도 쓸모 없는 이들이라고 불렀다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shiftless'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as shiftless, you mean that they are lazy and have no desire to achieve anything(어떤 사람을 shiftless 하다고 묘사한다면, 그들이 게으르고 무언가를 성취하고자 하는 의욕이 없다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 어감이다.

"...the lives of two shiftless, violent ex-convicts in 1950s America(...1950년대 미국의, 야망 없고 폭력적인 두 전과자들의 삶)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'shiftless'를 "lazy and not interested in anything(게으르고 아무것에도 흥미가 없는)"이라고 풀이했다.
