케임브릿지 사전은 'dog-eat-dog'(형용사)를 "used to describe a situation in which people will do anything to be successful, even if what they do harms other people(사람들이 성공하기 위해 무엇이라도, 설사 다른 이들에게 피해를 주는 것이라도 하는 상황을 묘사하기 위해 쓰이는 말)"이라고 정의했다.

"It's a dog-eat-dog world out there(세상은 잡아먹지 않으면 잡아먹히고 마는 치열한 경쟁이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'dog eat dog'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You use dog eat dog to express your disapproval of a situation where everyone wants to succeed and is willing to harm other people in order to do so(dog eat dog라는 말은 모두가 성공하고 싶어서 기꺼이 다른 이들에게 피해를 끼치는 상황을 못마땅해한다는 점을 표현하기 위해 쓴다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.
