케임브릿지 사전은 'upstage'를 "to take people's attention away from someone and make them listen to or look at you instead(다른 사람에게 갈 관심을 빼앗아 그 대신 자신의 말을 듣거나 자신을 보게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Most supporting bands tend to be youngsters, and rarely upstage the star(대부분의 서포트 밴드는 젊은이들이고, 대체로 스타의 인기를 가로채지 않는다)."

콜린스 사전은 'upstage'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone upstages you, they draw attention away from you by being more attractive or interesting(어떤 사람이 당신을 upstage 한다면, 당신보다 더욱 매력적이거나 흥미롭기 때문에 당신이 받아야 할 관심을 자신에게 끌어오는 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'upstage'를 "to do something so that you get more attention and admiration than someone else, especially someone who will be annoyed by this(다른 사람, 특히 이로 인해 짜증낼 사람들보다 더 많은 관심과존경을 받기 위해 어떤 일을 하다)"라고 풀이했다.
