'transition'은 '(다른 상태·조건으로의) 이행(移行)[과도(過渡)])'이라는 뜻인데, 예컨대 문과생이던 사람이 이과로 전과했다면 이런 변화도 'transition'이라고 할 수 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'transition'을 "a change from one form or type to another, or the process by which this happens(한 형태 또는 유형에서 다른 것으로의 변화, 또는 이것이 일어나는 과정)"라고 정의했다.

"The health-care system is in transition at the moment(보건 체계는 현재 과도기입니다)."

"There will be an interim government to oversee the transition to democracy(민주주의로의 이행을 감독할 임시 정부가 세워질 것이다)."
