케임브릿지 사전은 'spruce up something'을 "to improve the appearance of something by making it neater or by adding decorations(어떤 것을 더 깔끔하게 만들어서, 또는 장식을 추가해서 외관을 향상시키다)"라고 정의했다.

"She’d spruce the place up with plastic flowers(그녀는 그곳을 플라스틱 조화로 꾸밀 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'spruce up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is spruced up, its appearance is improved. If someone is spruced up, they have made themselves look very smart(어떤 것이 be spruced up 한다면, 그것의 외관이 향상되는 것이다. 어떤 사람이 be spruced up 한다면, 잣신을 아주 단정하게 보이게 만드는 것이다)."
