'mnemonic'은 '(기억을 돕는) 연상 기호'라는 뜻인데, 무지개의 일곱 가지 색을 기억하게 쉽게 줄여서 만든 말 '빨주노초파남보'가 그 예이다. 아니면 조선 왕조의 왕 이름 앞글자를 따서 가락을 붙여 부르는 '태정대세문단세 예성연중인명선 광인효현숙경영 정순헌철고순'도 'mnemonic'이다. 참고로 철자 맨 앞 'm'은 묵음이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'mnemonic'을 "something such as a very short poem or a special word used to help a person remember something(한 사람이 어떤 것을 기억하도록 돕는 것, 예컨대 짧은 시나 특별한 단어)"이라고 정의했다.

"The musical notes on the lines go EGBDF - use the mnemonic "Every good boy deserves fun"("악보의 음표는 'EGBDF'(미솔시레파) 순입니다. 'Every good boy deserves fun'이라는 문구의 앞글자를 이용해서 외우세요)."

콜린스 사전은 'mnemonic'을 이렇게 설명했다. "A mnemonic is a word, short poem, or sentence that is intended to help you remember things such as scientific rules or spelling rules. For example, 'i before e, except after c' is a mnemonic to help people remember how to spell words like 'believe' and 'receive'(mnemonic은 과학적 법칙 또는 철자법 따위를 기억하도록 도와주려고 의도된 단어, 짧은 시, 또는 문장이다. 예를 들어 'e 앞에 i', c 뒤에 올 때 빼고'는 'believe'나 'receive' 같은 단어의 철자를 쓰는 법을 기억하도록 도와주는 연상 문구이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'mnemonic'을 "a sentence or short poem that you use for helping you to remember something(어떤 것을 기억하는 데 도와주기 위해 이용하는 문장 또는 짧은 시)"이라고 풀이했다.
