케임브릿지 사전은 'proviso'를 "a statement in an agreement, saying that a particular thing must happen before another can(어떤 일이 일어날 수 있게 되기 전에 다른 것이 먼저 일어나야 한다는 합의의 진술)"이라고 정의했다.

"He was released from prison with/on the proviso that he doesn't leave the country(그는 국내를 떠나지 않는다는 조건으로 교도소에서 출소했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'proviso'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A proviso is a condition in an agreement. You agree to do something if this condition is fulfilled(proviso는 합의[문]에 있는 조건이다. 이 조건이 충족되면 어떤 것을 하겠다고 동의하는 것이다)."

"I told Norman I would invest in his venture as long as he agreed to one proviso(나는 노먼에게 그가 한 가지 단서에 동의한다면 그의 벤처 사업에 투자하겠다고 말했다)." 

"Okay, with the proviso that Jane agrees, I accept(좋습니다, 제인이 동의한 그 단서를 받아들이죠)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'proviso'를 "a condition that must be accepted before an agreement can be made(한 협정이 이루어지기 전에 받아들여져야 하는 조건)"라고 풀이했다.

"Buyers may return the goods, with the proviso that they do so within 14 days(구매자는 14일 내에 그렇게 한다는 조건 하에 상품을 환불할 수 있습니다)."

"This is, however, subject to a long list of provisos(이는, 그러나, 긴 목록의 조건이 딸려 있다)."
