케임브릿지 사전은 'the dust settles'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If the dust settles after an argument or big change, the situation becomes calmer(논쟁이나 큰 변화 이후에 the dust settles 한다면, 상황이 진정된 것이다) "

"We thought we'd let the dust settle before discussing the other matter(우리는 다른 주제를 논의하기 전에 사태가 가라앉을 때까지 기다려야겠다고 생각했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'The dust has settled'를 이렇게 설명했다. "said to mean that a situation has become calmer and steadier after a series of confusing or chaotic events(혼란스럽거나 혼돈스러운 일련의 사건들 이후로 상황이 진정되고 변동이 없게 되었다고 말할 때 쓰인다)"

"Now that the dust has settled, it is clear that nothing much has changed(이제 상황이 진정되었으니, 별로 바뀐 게 없다는 점은 명확하다)."

맥밀란 사전은은 'let the dust settle'을 "to allow a situation to become calm or normal again after something exciting or unusual has happened(흥미롭거나 특이한 일이 일어난 후 다시 상황이 진정되거나 정상으로 돌아가도록 허용하다)"라고 풀이했다.

"Let’s just let the dust settle before we decide what to do(뭘 할지 결정하기 전에 사태가 진정될 때까지 기다려 봅시다)."
