케임브릿지 사전은 'tide sb over'를 "to help someone to work or operate normally through a difficult period, usually by lending them money(대개 돈을 빌려줌으로써 어떤 사람이 어려운 시기를 정상적으로 보내거나 운용하도록 도와주다)"라고 정의했다.

"Can you lend me some money to tide me over till the weekend?(주말까지 버틸 돈 좀 빌려줄래?)"

"Have another piece of cake. It'll tide you over till supper(케이크 한 조각 더 먹어. 저녁 때까지 배 안 고프게)."
