케임브릿지 사전은 'taunt'를 "to intentionally annoy and upset someone by making unkind remarks to them, laughing unkindly at them, etc.(어떤 사람에게 불친절한 발언을 하고, 그들에게 불친절에게 비웃는 등의 행위를 해서 그들을 고의적으로 짜증 나게 하고 화나게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The other kids used to taunt him at recess because he was fat and wore glasses(다른 아이들은 그가 뚱뚱하고 안경을 썼다고 쉬는 시간에 그를 놀렸다)."

"The youngest in the group was taunted mercilessly(그 그룹의 최연소자는 자비 없게 조롱당했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'taunt'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone taunts you, they say unkind or insulting things to you, especially about your weaknesses or failures(어떤 사람이 당신을 taunt 한다면, 특히 당신의 약점이나 실패 등에 대해 불친절하거나 모욕하는 말을 당신에게 하는 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'taunt'를 "to shout cruel things at someone in order to make them angry or upset(다른 이를 화나고 짜증나게 하기 위해 그들에게 잔인한 말들을 소리치다)"이라고 풀이했다.
