케임브릿지 사전은 'slow burn'을 "a slow, controlled show of anger(느린, 통제된 방식으로 분노를 보여 주는 것)"라고 정의했다.

"When angered, Ellen was given to spontaneous outbursts, while her partner Terry would do a slow burn(화가 나면 엘런은 즉흥적으로 화를 분출하는 경향이 있는 반면, 그녀의 파트너 테리는 서서히 화가 더해 가는 스타일이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'slow burn'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is a slow burn, or if it happens on a slow burn, it develops slowly(어떤 것이 slow burn이라면, 또는 slow burn 하게 일어난다면, 천천히 발전해 나가는 것이다)."
