'come unstuck'은 말 그대로는 (어딘가에 끼워져 있거나 조립돼 있던 것이) 빠져나오거나 느슨해지는 걸 말한다.

이걸 계획이나 일에 쓰면, 당신이 원하는 대로 꼭 맞게 들어가 있어야 하는데 그러지 못했다, 즉 망했다, 실패했다는 뜻이 된다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'come unstuck'을 "to experience difficulties and fail(어려움을 겪고 실패하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"It was in the third round of the championships that they came unstuck(챔피언십의 세 번째 라운드에서 그들은 완전히 실패했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'come unstuck'을 이렇게 설명했다. "To come unstuck means to fail(come unstuck 하는 것은 실패하는 것이다)." 대체로 영국식(mainly British)이고 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"Economics comes unstuck when it doesn't take account of the actions of human beings(경제학은 인간의 행위를 고려하지 않는다면 완전히 실패한다)."

"Those who come unstuck are the ones who cannot sell the properties on fast enough(크게 실패한 이들은 부동산을 재빨리 팔지 못하는 사람들이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'unstuck'을 이렇게 풀이했다. "if something such as a plan or system comes unstuck, it fails(계획이나 체계가 come unstuck 한다면, 실패하는 것이다)"

"This point in the process is where we came unstuck(이 과정의 이 시점이 바로 우리가 대차게 망한 지점이다)."
