케임브릿지 사전은 'lose out'을 "to not have an advantage that other people have(다른 이들이 가진 이점을 가지지 못하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The new tax means that the vast majority of working people will lose out(새 세금은 노동자들의 대다수가 손해를 볼 거라는 의미이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'lose out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you lose out, you suffer a loss or disadvantage because you have not succeeded in what you were doing(lose out 한다면, 당신이 하는 일에 성공하지 못했기 때문에 손해 또는 불리한 점을 겪는 것이다)."
