[영어 공부] It's on the tip of my tongue(그게 뭐더라, 기억이 날 듯 말 듯하네)

 

가끔 사람 이름이나 영화 제목 등이 잘 떠오르지 않을 때가 있다.

어떤 느낌의 이름/제목이었는지 대략 기억은 나는데 정확하게 떠오르지 않으면 심지어 기분도 간질간질하다.

알 듯 말 듯, 기억이 날 듯 말 듯, 이럴 때는 "It's on the tip of my tongue."이라고 말하게 된다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'be on the top of your tongue'을 이렇게 정의한다. "If something that you want to say is on the tip of your tongue, you think you know it and that you will be able to remember it very soon(당신이 말하고자 하는 것이 on the tip of your tongue하면, 그것을 알고 있으면 금방 기억할 수 있을 것이라고 생각하는 것이다)."

"Her name is on the tip of my tongue(그녀 이름이 떠오를 듯 말 듯하네)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on the tip of your tongue'을 "if a word, name etc is on the tip of your tongue, you know it but cannot remember it at the time you are speaking(단어나 이름 등이 on the tip of your tongue하면, 그것을 알지만 당신이 말하는 순간엔 기억해 낼 수 없는 것이다)"라고 설명했다.

"Wait – it’s on the tip of my tongue – her name is Fiona(기다려 봐, 그게 뭐더라, 아, 걔 이름은 피오나야)."
