케임브릿지 사전은 'take sb under your wing'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you take someone under your wing, you start to protect and take care of them(어떤 사람을 under your wing 한다면, 그들을 보호하고 돌봐 주기 시작하는 것이다)"

"I was a little bit lonely at the time and she took me under her wing(당시에 나는 조금 외로웠고, 그녀가 나를 보살피며 도와주었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'underthe wing of someone'을 "in a situation in which someone controls you or takes responsibility for you(어떤 이가 당신을 통제하거나 당신에 대한 책임을 맡는 상황인)"라고 설명했다.
