[영어 공부] wear sb down(누군가를 끈질기게 조르거나 설득해 승낙을 얻어내다)

 

어릴 적에 누구나 한 번쯤은 부모님께 뭘 사 달라고 끈질기게 조른 적 있을 것이다.

아주 참을성 있게 조르다 보면 부모님은 마지못해 사 주셨을 것이다. 이렇게 사람 피곤하게(부모님 죄송) 계속 조르거나 설득을 해서 결국 마지못해 OK를 얻어 내는 게 바로 'wear sb down'이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'wear sb down'을 "to make someone feel tired and less able to deal successfully with a situation(상대방이 피곤하고 상황을 성공적으로 대처하기 어렵게 만들다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Both sides are trying to wear the other down by being obstinate in the negotiations(양측은 협상 과정에서 자신의 입장을 고수해서 상대방이 지쳐 나가떨어지게 만드려고 하는 중이다)."

"All the stress and extra travel is beginning to wear him down(스트레스와 추가적인 이동량이 그를 지치게 만들기 시작했다)."

콜린스 사전은 wear down을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you wear someone down, you make them gradually weaker or less determined until they eventually do what you want(당신이 누군가를 wear down한다면, 그들이 결국 당신이 원하는 일을 할 때까지 그들을 점차 약하게 또는 마음을 누그러뜨리게 만드는 것이다)."

"None can match your sheer will-power and persistence in wearing down the opposition(상대방을 지치게 만드는 네 의지력과 고집을 따라올 자가 없지)."

"They hoped the waiting and the uncertainty would wear down my resistance(그들은 기다림과 불확실성이 나의 저항을 누그러뜨리기를 바랐다)."
