케임브릿지 사전은 'derision'을 "the situation in which someone or something is laughed at and considered stupid or of no value(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 비웃음을 당하고 멍청하거나 가치가 없다고 여겨지는 상황)"라고 정의했다.

"They treated his suggestion with derision(그들은 그의 제안을 조롱했다)."

"Her speech was met with hoots/howls of derision(그녀의 연설은 조롱하는 비웃음을 샀다)."

콜린스 사전은 'derision'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you treat someone or something with derision, you express contempt for them(어떤 사람 또는 사물을 derision으로 대한다면, 그들을 향한 경멸을 표현하는 것이다)."

"He tried to calm them, but was greeted with shouts of derision(그는 그들을 진정시키려고 노력했지만, 조롱하는 소리만 들었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'derision'을 "the opinion that someone or something is stupid, unimportant, or useless(어떤 사람이나 사물이 멍청하거나, 중요하지 않거나, 쓸모없다는 의견)"라고 풀이했다.
