케임브릿지 사전은 'subsume'을 "to include something or someone as part of a larger group(어떤 사물이나 사람을 더 큰 그룹의 일부분으로 포함하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Soldiers from many different countries have been subsumed into the United Nations peace-keeping force(다른 많은 국가의 군인들이 UN 평화 유지군에 포함되었다)."

"All the statistics have been subsumed under the general heading "Facts and Figures"(모든 통계는 "사실과 수치"라는 대략적인 제목 아래 포함되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'subsume'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something is subsumed within a larger group or class, it is included within it, rather than being considered as something separate(어떤 것이 더 큰 그룹이나 층위에 subsumed 된다면, 그것은 개별적인 것으로 여겨지기보다 그 안에 포함되는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Small family firms were subsumed into the huge investment banks(작은 가족 기업들은 거대한 투자 은행에 포함되었다)."

"...years of repression in which civil society was subsumed by the State(...시민 사회가 국가에 포함된 억압의 세월)."

맥밀란 사전은 'subsume'을 "to include something in a larger group and cause it to lose its own individual character(어떤 것을 더 큰 그룹에 포함해서 그 개별적인 특징을 잃게 하다)"라고 풀이했다. 

"The new treaty subsumes all past agreements(새로운 조약은 과거의 모든 합의를 포함한다)."

"Art courses have been subsumed under the Humanities Department(예술 강좌는 인문학부에 포함되었다)."
