케임브릿지 사전은 'stupefied'를 "very surprised or shocked(아주 놀라거나 충격받은)"라고 정의했다.

"We were so stupefied by the news that we all sat in silence for a long time(우리는 그 뉴스에 너무 충격을 받아서 오랫동안 아무 말 없이 앉아 있었다)."

"She was stupefied to learn that he didn't know how to make his bed(그녀는 그가 침대 이불을 갤 줄 모른다는 사실을 알게 되어 충격받았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'stupefy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If something stupefies you, it shocks or surprises you so much that you cannot think properly for a while(어떤 것이 당신을 stupefy 한다면, 그것이 당신에게 충격을 주거나 당신을 무척 놀라게 해서 한동안 제대로 생각할 수 없는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"...a violent slap on the side of the head, which stunned and stupefied him(...그를 충격받고 얼이 빠지게 만든, 싸대기 날리기)."

맥밀란 사전은 'stupefy'를 "extremely surprised or shocked(지극히 놀란 또는 충격받은)"라고 풀이했다.
