케임브릿지 사전은 'drag someone's name through the mire/mud'를 "to damage someone's reputation by saying extremely insulting things about them(지극히 모욕적인 말을 함으로써 어떤 사람의 명예를 실추하다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'be dragged through the mud'를 "to be accused of behaving in an immoral or unacceptable way(비도덕적이거나 용납할 수 없는 방식으로 행동했다는 혐의를 제기당하다)"라고 설명했다.

"One doesn't like to see an admired institution dragged through the mud like this(존경받던 기관이 이렇게 이름이 더럽혀지는 걸 보고 싶어 하는 사람은 없다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'drag somebody’s name through the mud'를 "to tell people about the bad things that someone has done, so that they will have a bad opinion of them(어떤 사람이 저지른 나쁜 일들에 대해 사람들에게 말해서, 사람들이 그들에 대해 나쁘게 생각하도록 하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
