케임브릿지 사전은 'spiel'을"a speech, especially one that is long and spoken quickly and is intended to persuade the person listening about something(특히 길고 재빨리 말하며, 듣는 상대방을 어떤 것에 대해 설득하도록 의도된 연설)"이라고 정의했다.

"a sales spiel(세일즈 레파토리)"

"They gave us a long spiel about why we needed to install double glazing in our house(그들은 우리에게 왜 우리가 집에 이중 유리창을 설치해야 하는지에 대해 기나긴 연설을 늘어놓았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'spiel'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone's spiel is a well-prepared speech that they make, and that they have usually made many times before, often in order to persuade you to buy something(누군가의 spiel은 그들이 하는, 잘 준비되고 상대에게 무엇을 사라고 설득하기 위한, 대개 이전에 여러 번 해 온 연설이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'spiel'을 "a speech that somebody has used many times that is intended to persuade you to believe something or buy something(당신으로 하여금 무엇을 믿거나 무엇을 사도록 설득하려고 의도된, 어떤 사람이 이전에 많이 사용한 연설)"이라고 풀이했다.
