케임브릿지 사전은 'sidestep'을 "to avoid talking about a subject, especially by starting to talk about something else(어떤 주제에 대해 이야기하기를 피하다, 특히 다른 것에 대해 이야기하기 시작함으로써 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The speaker sidestepped the question by saying that it would take him too long to answer it(연사는 그 질문에 대답하기는 오래 걸릴 것 같다며 대답을 회피했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'sidestep'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you sidestep a problem, you avoid discussing it or dealing with it(어떤 문제를 sidestep 한다면, 그것에 관해 논의하거나 대처하기를 피하는 것이다)."
