케임브릿지 사전은 'lay it on thick'을 "to praise someone too much(어떤 사람을 과하게 칭찬하다)"라고 정의했다.

"She went on and on about how she admired his work - laid it on a bit thick, if you ask me(그녀는 계속해서 얼마나 그의 작품을 존경하는지 늘어놓았다. 나는 그녀가 좀 과장이 심하다고 생각했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'lay it on thick'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is laying it on thick or is laying it on, they are exaggerating a statement, experience, or emotion in order to try to impress people(어떤 사람이 lay it on thick 또는 lay it on 한다면, 타인들에게 깊은 인상을 주기 위해 어떤 발언이나 경험, 또는 감정 등을 과장하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"Don't lay it on too thick, but make sure they are flattered(과장하지는 마, 하지만 상대가 우쭐해하게 만들어)." 

"I may have spoken a bit too freely, been a bit extreme, even laid it on a little(내가 너무 자유롭게, 좀 극단적으로 말한 것 같다. 아마 좀 심하게 과장한 듯)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'lay it on thick'을 "to talk about somebody/something in a way that makes them or it seem much better or much worse than they really are; to exaggerate something(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 실제보다 더 낫거나 더 못하게 보이는 식으로 말하다; 어떤 것을 과장하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Praise them when necessary, but don't lay it on too thick(필요하면 그들을 칭찬하되, 과장하지는 마라)."
