케임브릿지 사전은 'turn tail'을 "to turn around and run away, usually because you are frightened(대개 겁을 먹었기 때문에 몸을 돌려 도망치다)"라고 정의했다.

"As soon as they saw we had guns, they turned tail and ran away(우리가 총을 가지고 있다는 걸 그들이 보자마자, 그들은 꽁무니를 빼고 달아났다)."

콜린스 사전은 'turn tail'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you turn tail, you turn and run away(turn tail 한다면 몸을 돌려서 도망가는 것이다)."

"I turned tail and fled in the direction of the main house(나는 꽁무니를 빼고 본가 쪽으로 달아났다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'turn tail'을 "to run away because you are too frightened to fight or attack(싸우거나 공격하기에 너무 겁을 먹어서 도망치다)"이라고 풀이했다.
