케임브릿지 사전은 'threadbare'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Threadbare material or clothes have become thin or damaged because they have been used a lot(threadbare한 직물 또는 옷은 많이 사용되어 얇아지거나 훼손된 것이다)"

"a threadbare coat(낡아서 올이 다 드러난 코트)"

콜린스 사전은 'threadbare'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Threadbare clothes, carpets, and other pieces of cloth look old, dull, and very thin, because they have been worn or used too much(threadbare한 옷, 카페트, 그리고 다른 천 조각들은 많이 입거나 사용되어서 오래되고, 칙칙하거나, 아주 얇아 보이는 것이다)."
