케임브릿지 사전은 'recess'를 "a secret or hidden place(비밀스러운, 또는 숨겨진 곳)"라고 정의했다.

"Psychoanalysts aim to explore the deepest/innermost recesses of the mind(정신 분석가들은 정신의 가장 깊은 구석진 곳을 탐구하는 것을 목표로 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'recess'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you refer to the recesses of someone's mind or soul, you are referring to thoughts or feelings they have which are hidden or difficult to describe(어떤 사람의 마음이나 영혼의 recess는 숨겨져 있거나 묘사하기 어려운, 그들의 생각이나 감정을 가리킨다)."
