케임브릿지 사전은 'beholden'을 "feeling you have a duty to someone because they have done something for you(상대가 당신을 위해 무엇을 해 주었기 때문에 그들에게 어떤 의무가 있다고 느끼는)"라고 정의했다.

"She wanted to be independent and beholden to no one(그녀는 독립적이 되어서 아무에게도 신세를 지지 않고 싶어 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'beholden'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are beholden to someone, you are in debt to them in some way or you feel that you have a duty to them because they have helped you(어떤 사람에게 beholden하다면, 그들이 당신을 도왔기 때문에, 어떤 면에서 그들에게 빚을 졌다고 느끼거나 그들에게 의무가 있다고 느끼는 것이다)."

"He was made beholden to the Mafia(그는 마피아에게 신세를 지게 되었다)."

"We feel really beholden to them for what they've done(우리는 그들이 해 준 일에 신세를 졌다고 느낍니다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'beholden'을 "owing something to somebody because of something that they have done for you(상대가 당신을 위해 해 준 일 때문에 그들에게 무언가를 빚진)"라고 풀이했다.
