케임브릿지 사전은 'gnarled'를 "rough and twisted, especially because of old age or no protection from bad weather(특히 오래되었거나 나쁜 날씨로부터 보호받지 못해, 거칠고 뒤틀린)"라고 정의했다.

"The old man drew a long, gnarled finger across his throat(노인은 길고 옹이가 많은 손가락을 목에 가져다댔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gnarled'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A gnarled tree is twisted and strangely shaped because it is old(gnarled한 나무는 오래되었기 때문에 뒤틀리고 이상한 모양을 한 것이다)."
