케임브릿지 사전은 'tank'를 "to make something suddenly fail or become less successful(어던 것이 갑자기 실패하거나 덜 성공적이게 되게 만들다)"이라고 정의했다.

"They were so opposed to the change in policy that they tanked the whole deal(그들은 정책 변화에 무척 반대해서, 그 건을 전부 말아먹었다)."

"People need real answers from the investment firms that tanked the economy(사람들은 경제를 말아먹은 투자 회사로부터 진실된 답변이 필요하다)."

롱맨 사전은 'tank'를 "to fail badly and be very unsuccessful(크게 실패하고 아주 성공하지 못하다)"이라고 설명했다. 비격식적인(informal) 표현이다.

"His last film tanked in the States, but did well in the UK(그의 최근 영화는 미국에서는 망했지만, 영국에서는 성적이 괜찮았다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'tank'를 "to decrease suddenly or fail completely(갑자기 감소하거나 완전히 실패하다)"라고 풀이했다.
