케임브릿지 사전은 'be cooking with gas'를 "to be making very good progress or doing something very well(아주 큰 진척을 보이거나 어떤 것을 아주 잘하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"I can see we're really cooking with gas now(우리는 이제 잘해나가고 있군요)."

"We've jumped two places in the league this year. Another two next year and we're cooking with gas(우리는 올해 두 단계나 뛰어올랐어. 내후년이면 우린 진짜 큰 성과를 낼 거야)."

롱맨 사전은 'be cooking with gas'를 구어체로 "used to say that someone is doing something very well(어떤 사람이 무엇을 아주 잘한다고 말할 때 쓰는 말)"이라는 뜻이라고 설명했다.
